Refractories for Steel & Iron
Refractories in iron and steel production are used in the blast furnace, hot blast stove, cast house and coke oven on the ironmaking side, and in the hot metal ladle, converter, electric arc furnace, steel ladle, tundish, RH degasser and reheating furnace on the steelmaking side. Material selection varies by operating zone and includes silica, high alumina, magnesia, magnesia-carbon, alumina-silicon carbide-carbon and silicon carbide products together with castables, ramming mixes and mortars.

Refractory Requirements — Steel & Iron
RISING’s technical references for the steel industry cover both halves of an integrated works. The ironmaking technical reference documents refractories for the blast furnace body, the hot blast stove, the cast house and the coke oven including the coke dry quenching plant. The steelmaking technical reference documents the hot metal ladle and torpedo ladle, the converter, the electric arc furnace, the steel ladle, the tundish, the RH degasser, the AOD furnace and the reheating furnace.
Both references are organised the same way: for each piece of equipment they separate shaped refractories from unshaped refractories, and they assign different materials to different zones of the same vessel. The blast furnace scheme runs from the furnace throat down through stack, bosh, belly, hearth and bottom; the converter, electric furnace and ladle diagrams each name an impact or hot-spot area, a slag line, a working lining and a permanent lining, with a different grade against each.
The selection table below reproduces those assignments. Refractory terms are listed as named in the references. A term links to a product page where a catalogue product matches; otherwise it is listed among the types supplied on request. Grade selection for a specific furnace is confirmed against your operating conditions before quotation.

Technical Considerations
- Shaped and unshaped are listed separately
- Both technical references separate shaped refractories from unshaped refractories for each piece of equipment, and the blast furnace and hot blast stove sections each carry their own shaped and unshaped lists. A lining specification therefore names bricks and monolithics for the same vessel.
- Grades change within one vessel
- The converter, electric furnace and ladle diagrams assign different magnesia carbon grades to the impact area, the slag line, the barrel and the permanent lining of the same vessel. The technical reference does not offer one grade for a whole vessel.
- Equipment covered by the ironmaking source
- The ironmaking technical reference covers the blast furnace body, the hot blast stove, the cast house, the coke oven and the coke dry quenching plant. Its CDQ section separates an insulation layer, a permanent layer and a working layer, and names a different working-layer material for each zone of the plant.
- Equipment covered by the steelmaking source
- The steelmaking technical reference covers the blast furnace taphole and runners, the hot metal ladle, the torpedo ladle, the converter, the steel ladle, the electric furnace, the tundish, the RH furnace, the AOD furnace and the heating furnace, plus medium frequency, induction and cupola furnaces for casting.
